Features

Firstly, let’s examine the product’s features.

  1. Besides 3D Blu-rays, the smart-looking Oppo BDP-93 is capable of playing DVDs, SACDs, DVD-Audio discs and CDs, DivX, FLAC, MKV and WAV files.
  1. It has two HDMI outputs – enabling the user to bypass an older amp that doesn’t support 3D video, or alternatively, link to two different displays.
  1. In addition to the dual HDMI outputs, this model also features eSATA port for fast connections to external drives, a wireless-n adapter, integrated LAN, a 7.1-channel analog output for connection to older receivers, digital optical and coaxial outputs as well as two USB 2.0 inputs that support video and music.
  1. An ethernet connection is also included for firmware updates and streaming of networked media.

But these features aside, as buyers or potential buyers, we want to know if it  delivers.

Oppo BDP-93 Review – What We Find

If there is just one thing that we can complement about this product, in this Oppo BDP-93 review, we attest to its image quality. And in one word, it is “superb”.

Playing from a 3D, picture quality was impressively sharp, featuring great details with dark black levels and bright colors.

Oppo used to have Anchor Bay’s Video Reference Series (VRS) in its previous products. But the BDP-93 incorporates Qdeo video processing technology by Marvell. In essence, what this technology does is it handles per-pixel noise reduction as well as de-interlacing and edge enhancement. In particular though, the Qdeo techonology does a great job at  upsampling DVD and web-based content. The result : nothing short of a cinematic video experience.

For consumers in the United States, an additional feature is the player’s ability to stream films from Netflix.

While others have been skeptical about the player’s net abilities, we find that it produces equally impressive images as those from 3D and DVD.

How About Audio Quality?

Sound produced by the player, though good, is not in the same league as that by the BDP-95. But unless you are one who goes for audio fidelity or are willing to fork out about $500 more for the BDP-95, then the Oppo BDP-93 should be your player of choice.

If you still insist on getting more out of the audio, you can get around the issue by hooking the player to a decent (not necessarily expensive) DAC receiver.
